The Ways We Connect: from Fairy Tales to Voice Notes (S21E1)

Hey lovely Reader

Gosh. It's been a while.

I took my August break and it was BIG. Bigger than I anticipated.

I spent time with family and friends. I danced. I cried. I laughed. I shared. I listened. I swam. I slept. And I processed.

Often that's what these long breaks are made of. They're a time to disentangle the stuff that no longer serves me, to release what is asking to be released and to absorb the lessons that come with the All.

As I write I'm mindful of what might be surfacing within you. Are there things asking to be disentangled, released, absorbed? Or are you carried in the flow of creativity? Or are there things feeling heavy on your shoulders; in your heart? I am sending love for it all. And I hope you are finding spaces to be present with whatever life is bringing you right now.

As today's episode of the podcast unfolded, there were three threads that appeared:

  • I reflect on connection - between writer and reader, speaker and listener, self and self - and I ask a question about Fairy Tales that you may like to sit with.
  • I also share some thoughts on voice notes: the way they allow us to communicate - to connect - even more freely with each other.
  • Lastly I share a little about what we'll be exploring in Season Two of The Field.

Listen to the episode on the Henny Flynn podcast wherever you get your podcasts.

My reflections on fairy tales - including how Little Red Riding Hood has helped me understand something in my own life - has inspired a Field Note. So if you prefer reading to listening or want to dive a little deeper, the Field Note is here for you too (see below).

It feels wonderful to be back. And there are so many beautiful things coming up this autumn - I'll share more soon, in bitesize emails, so you can choose what best suits you.

In the meantime, may we all be safe, happy and well. May we all live with ease. May we know, in our bones, that we are all connected.

With love

PS: Our first gathering for Season Two of The Field is on Thursday 10 September - if you'd like to join us, just click here. If you're curious about intentional change, grounded in compassionate self-enquiry, then this space of connection may call to you. You would be so welcome there.

For those who love to read, here's a Field Note all about how we can connect with the wisdom of Fairy Tales. It begins...

What might your Fairy Tale be telling you?

I ask a question in this week's episode of the podcast, and I wanted to come back to it here because, well, ten minutes isn’t really enough for such a big topic...

If there was a fairy tale from your childhood that has stayed with you - what would it be?

One of mine is Little Red Riding Hood.

I've sat with this one for years, and what I keep finding underneath it is a fear of being lost (I’ve done a LOT of work on this), and something else too: a visceral, bodily reaction to things that present themselves as one thing and reveal themselves as another.

When someone isn't being honest about what they're really feeling - or who they truly are - my nervous system knows before my mind does. I've come to think that sensitivity is part of why I do this work - it's the same thing that lets me sense when there's something unspoken sitting underneath what a client is saying. As with so many things in life it’s a spectrum - at one end is something that can feel unsafe for me… at the other is sensing what could help others feel safer.

I don't think that's a coincidence, and I don't think it's...

Lastly, I've tried something new(ish) this week. I've filmed the episode too... so you can find it on YouTube. Unpolished. Unedited. Raw. Just like the podcast, only visual.
