The wisdom of being bored
Hey lovely Reader
This week’s episode was inspired by two things:
- Reflecting on how quickly we can reach for distractions
- Some slightly unusual parenting advice my mum once gave me
In London this week, travelling on the tube, I became deeply curious about the power of boredom; wondering what are we missing if we never allow ourselves to get bored?
It sparked a memory of something my mum said when my son was very little... let him be bored. At the time I wasn't completely sure why she said it. I think I now see the wisdom in it.
For me, boredom often leads to new ideas, conversations I wouldn’t otherwise have, and a kind of softening that makes space for creativity. In the episode, I explore:
- the link between boredom and creativity
- how distraction can narrow our awareness
- why choosing boredom, even for a few minutes, can be a simple, gentle experiment
You can listen here. Maybe it sparks thoughts for you too?
May we all be safe, happy, well and at ease. May we all be compassionately creative.
With love
PS: Have you had a listen to Tuesday’s Thought - the 10-minute reflection that follows each main episode? They’ve been lovely to make - and I’d love to know if you enjoy them too.
